It was 3:00am when it hit me. A new idea that is going to shake my project into greatness!
Like most things in life, my creativity comes in cycles. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night inspired. I try to go back to sleep, but it’s so exciting, I have to write it down. Now.
So in the middle of this night, I quietly tip-toed into the living room with my pen and paper, and let the creativity flow. Oh, it felt great!
After 20 minutes or so, I looked up to see Ron standing in the doorway. “You’re writing”.
Me: “I’m sorry, Honey, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Ron: “I woke up and you were gone.”
Me: “I’m sorry, I had this idea…” My codependent button had been triggered. I truly felt selfish that my “quirk” had left him feeling alone and was causing him to lose sleep.
Now, here was his opportunity to tell me that I am crazy, it’s 3:00am and I need to get back to bed, that whatever I am doing can wait until the morning.
He says, “Are you cold?”
My heart melted. I just looked at him and felt so understood and loved. This man really “gets” me.
For 12 years he has encouraged me to be me; sometimes he believes in me more than I do. Why do I still forget that?
It got me thinking. What if we all followed Ron’s example and just accepted and loved the people we care about as they ARE, rather than going around trying to change them? Whether it is at work or in our personal relationships, the greatest honor you can give someone is to “get” them. Even if you don’t fully comprehend what they are doing or why, by at least trying, you will create a relationship based on freedom.
I let him know that I was fine. He went back to bed and I joined him a few minutes later, feeling lighter and even more in love.

Such a wonderful post…. I was doing the exact same thing last night until 1am… had to jump up and tip toe out to write my ideas… too funny! I loved the message you received from that experience too. All too often we do try to change others and that is the wrong way to look at our relationships, if we all just accepted each other and loved each for who we are then the world would be a very peaceful and amazing place for sure!
All the best to you:)
