As children, some of us were taught to “only speak when spoken to” or learned that when we spoke, we were not really heard. We may have found ourselves in an environment (maybe a family) where there are just certain things that you can’t or don’t talk about.
We may have learned to filter what we say because our dreams have been shot down, minimized, or laughed at. In the recent Alice in Wonderland movie, Alice is told by her potential fiancé, “It would be best to keep your visions to yourself. When in doubt, remain silent”. Our ancestors may have been punished or even beheaded for speaking their truth.
So, the fact that we struggle with speaking up, especially for ourselves, is not surprising and goes deep…And, that way of being no longer works for the radiance that we are cultivating.
As individuals and as a culture, we need ALL of the voices, ideas, visions, and dreams to create what we are becoming. Especially yours!
It is a daring choice to speak from our heart. To clearly communicate what we feel, want, and dream takes courage and believing in ourselves as the “expert” on our lives. That TRUE voice, the one that speaks from who we really are, is filled with compassion, creativity, and passion. It is a gift that we can so easily share.
Speaking up is one thing, and being heard is another. It is not only about the words we say, it’s also about listening for what words NEED to be said, and trusting ourselves to speak them at the time when we can be heard.
It is amazing how a strong commitment leaves no doubt, but a simple change in tone or questioning our own voice robs us of our credibility. I have actually told someone how I feel, and made it sound more like a question. Like, “I’ll feel this way, if that’s okay with you.” Poppycock!
We are more alive and so radiant when we speak our truth and share our dreams. It turns up our light and lights up the people around us. I think this quote from Heather O’hara says it so well.
“We did not come here to be common… We did not travel this great distance to give up, give in and lie down. We came here to wake up and be joyful; to stand up and be powerful; to open up our hearts, our minds and our eyes as we expand our knowledge and our perception. You are extraordinary and you are powerful beyond belief!”
We just have to open our mouths.
What dreams are locked away, unspoken inside of you?
What words are screaming to get out?
Let them free in the boldest way that serves the highest purpose, speak up, and Cultivate Radiance through your voice.
